LAGERS retirees have several different options for working after they retire. If a retiree decides to return to work, he or she should be aware of how it may affect their current LAGERS retirement benefit.
Working After Retirement
A retiree's benefit will NOT be affected if:
He or she employs full time or part time for any private or non-LAGERS employer.
He or she re-employs part time for an employer from which she is drawing a benefit.
Part time is defined as less than the "Annual Hours Required for Coverage" that is elected by each employer.
He or she re-employs full time for a different LAGERS employer from which he is receiving a benefit.
Before the retiree may re-employ with a different LAGERS employer, he or she must have one calendar month break in employment. Once the retiree has been re-employed for 12 consecutive months, he or she would be vested and eligible for an additional monthly benefit upon the second retirement.
A retiree's benefit will be suspended if:
He or she re-employs full time with an employer from which he or she is currently receiving a benefit.
If this were to happen, the monthly benefit would be suspended and the retiree would again become an active member of LAGERS. Once the retiree has been re-employed for 12 consecutive months, he or she would be re-vested and eligible for an additional monthly benefit upon his second retirement. Upon the second retirement, the first benefit would also be reinstated.
According to state law, a LAGERS member may not be earning a benefit from the same employer from which he or she is currently drawing a benefit.
